Shelter-in-Place Health Tips

May 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought “our long-established habits and rhythms of life” to a STOP! And the stress is real! So, as you strive to balance home, family and work while sheltering-in-place, keep these 4 ‘tips’ top of mind.

Digital Eyestrain – Find balance in digital usage. “Electronic devices, including television, give off blue and violet light that may affect vision by causing eyestrain – burning, itchy or tired eyes, blurry vision, headache, fatigue – and discomfort.” Take regular breaks, and remember the importance of exposure to natural sunlight. (American Optometric Association)

Heartburn – In these stressful times, “that searing chest pain you may feel after eating can be a common symptom of Acid Reflux, GERD and Barrett’s Esophagus, a precancerous condition.” Be mindful of your discomfort, and “if you experience chest or upper abdominal pain, dry cough, difficulty swallowing, or frequent heartburn, talk to your doctor.” (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center)

Skip the Sugar for Heart Health – “Be cognizant of sugar sources – coffee drinks, sodas, yeast breads, cereals, fruit drinks – because sugar isn’t as sweet as it seems. One to two servings of sugary drinks per day raises a person’s risk of heart disease by 35 percent.” (Journal of American College of Cardiology)

The Power of Soap – “Germs are most commonly found in oil that occurs naturally on our hands and bodies. Soap does not kill germs, but rather removes them effectively – IF hands are washed correctly. The soap molecules directly attach themselves to oil, and suspend it in water, allowing the oil and germs to be rinsed off. So, wash for at least 20 seconds, or the time it takes to hum the “Happy Birthday” song two times.” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention & Eco-Soap Bank, ecosoap.org)
